Preparing your outdoor sauna for autumn: time for sauna season

Summer is slowly coming to an end and temperatures are starting to drop. For an outdoor sauna, that is good news: autumn and winter may well be the best seasons to enjoy your sauna. Before the real sauna season begins, it is a good idea to thoroughly clean and inspect your outdoor sauna.

With a few simple maintenance tasks, you can get your sauna ready for many relaxing autumn evenings.

Give your outdoor sauna a thorough clean

Start by cleaning the inside of the sauna with a suitable wood cleaner. Clean the benches, backrests and floor, removing any dust and dirt. Then treat the sauna benches with a bench protector to protect them against moisture and dirt.

Also clean the exterior with a suitable exterior wood cleaner and retreat the wood if necessary. This will keep your sauna looking well maintained and ready for autumn.

Check the woodwork of your sauna

Throughout the year, an outdoor sauna is exposed to sun, rain, wind and temperature fluctuations. Autumn is therefore a good time to inspect the woodwork.

Check the exterior for dirt, damage and discolouration. Depending on the type of wood used and the desired appearance, it may be necessary to clean or retreat the wood. Pay extra attention to areas that are frequently exposed to rain and moisture.

Check the sauna heater and sauna stones

The sauna heater is, of course, essential during the colder months. Before autumn begins, check that it is functioning properly.

If you have a wood-burning sauna heater, clean the heater and check the flue. Remove any ash residue and make sure the air supply is unobstructed.

Do you have an electric sauna heater? Check that the heater and controls are working properly. For both types of heaters, inspect the sauna stones as well. Are any of the stones cracked, heavily weathered or crumbling? If so, it may be time to replace them and arrange the stones properly in the heater again.

Check the doors, windows and ventilation

Take some time to inspect the rest of your outdoor sauna as well. Check that the doors and windows open and close properly and make sure everything still fits and seals correctly. Also check the ventilation openings and make sure they are not blocked.

Good ventilation is important to allow the sauna to dry properly after use. Especially during the damp autumn months, it is worth paying extra attention to this.

Keep leaves and moisture away from your sauna

In autumn, leaves can quickly accumulate around or on top of your sauna. Remove them regularly and keep any gutters and drains clear as well. Make sure rainwater can drain away properly and does not remain around the wooden structure for long periods.

A little extra attention during autumn will help keep your outdoor sauna in good condition throughout the wettest months of the year.

Ready for the best sauna season

Once your outdoor sauna is clean and everything is working properly, you are ready for autumn. An outdoor sauna truly comes into its own when the temperature outside starts to drop. Stepping from the crisp outdoor air into a warm sauna makes the experience even more special.

Light the wood-burning heater or switch on the electric sauna heater or gas heater, let the sauna reach the desired temperature and enjoy your own wellness moment in the garden.
